Welcome to Stuart
Disney Golf Holidays and Tuition!
This coaching trip is
intended to give you, the golfer a golfing holiday to remember. There are four
rounds of golf booked at the lovely Benamor course near Tavira with the
opportunity to relax and explore an area yet to be ruined by mass tourism. The
area of Tavira is beautiful and is the place that the Portuguese spend their
holidays. You will experience a part of Portugal that is long forgotten and an
area that you will want to come back to. The course has been chosen to allow you
to enjoy your golf; it is not especially challenging in terms of Championship
standard, yet offers you some of the best scenery around. You have three free
days in which to relax or you can book further golf if you wish. The
comprehensive coaching programme will help you to improve your game and give you
the opportunity to practise it at the same time. Along with some competitive
golf, you are sure to have a great holiday. During your time off from the golf
course, feel free to explore the area; you have after all, a hire car per couple
to do as you wish. The hotel can give you all the information you need for that
perfect day away and they will cater for your every whim.
About Tavira and surrounding area
Tavira is a traditional
fishing village and is perfect for golfers wishing to explore a true Portuguese
village, whilst being close to some excellent courses. You will not find a
McDonalds, a “greasy spoon” or neon lights in Tavira; only traditional and
charming restaurants and bars - a welcoming change for some! The hotel has
pretty much all the facilities golfers require and accommodations match the
usual high standards of the Vila Galé group. Highly recommended for those
looking for a bit of the real Portugal!
Tavira - History
Tavira along with Lagos is one of the most architecturally
attractive towns in the Algarve and its origin dates back to around 2.000 BC.
During the occupation of the Algarve by the Moors this town was considered of
great importance due to its fishing industry. Dom Paio Peres Correia took
it from the Moors in anger in 1242 after seven of his principal Knights were
killed during a period of truce. In the 17th Century the port in its river was
of considerable importance, shipping produce such as salt, dried fish and wine.
Like most of the Algarve its buildings were all virtually destroyed by the
earthquake of 1755.
Tavira - Description
The town has since been rebuilt with many fine 18th Century buildings along with
its 37 churches. A Roman bridge links the two parts of the town across the River
Gilão. The church of Santa Maria do Castelo is built on the site
of a Moorish Mosque and in it are the tombs of Dom Paio Peres Correia and
his seven Knights. Its original economic reliance on the fishing industry has
now been surpassed due to the change in the migration patterns of the tuna fish.
The population is in the region of 20,000 inhabitants supporting a military base
whilst the surrounding area is still very rural and undeveloped. This is now
changing due to the demands of the tourist industry and opening of golf courses
in the near vicinity. The beach for this town lies past the salt pans and is
reached by a ferryboat that takes the visitor to the sandy-bar island known as
Ilha de Tavira.
Tavira - Nearby Locations
Near to Tavira is Cabanas and Pedras del Rey, both small
beachfront villages catering specifically for the tourist. It is in the latter
that there exists an olive tree that is said to date from the 17th Century and
probably the oldest one of its type in Portugal. It stands 7.70 metres high and
its girth is 11.80 metres. In the small village of Luz de Tavira there is
one of the finest examples of Manueline craftsmanship around the southern door
of the Parish Church. Santa Luzia gets its name from a shipwrecked
Italian effigy of the Virgin Mary and is a very small un-spoilt village with a
fort. Near to the Torre de Aves there are the remains of a Roman villa.
To the east of Tavira and overlooking the sea is the still original
traditional village of Cacela-a-Velha used by the Phoenicians and later
becoming the possession of the Knights of Santiago in 1240.
The Golf Course
Benamor has the following
facilities: Driving Range, Putting Green and large putting course, Club hire,
Trolleys and buggies, Bag drop service. The clubhouse is purpose built,
featuring a large terrace from which to enjoy the sunshine and views.
Reception/shop, locker room and elegant bar/restaurant with multi-lingual
service, a very friendly welcome awaits.
Other Golf near Tavira
There are of course other
places to play golf near to Tavira. If you wish, golf can be arranged at the
following courses on the days that we are not playing and practising at Benamor.
Quinta Da Ria – a
tough Championship course, 6,100m (6,800 yds) par 72
Quinta Da Cima – an
even tougher challenge! 6,256m (6,950 yds) par 72
Castro Marim – a very
scenic course set in the mountains, 5,256m (5,800 yds) par 71 (Ladies par 73)
For the more adventurous, why
not take a day trip into Spain and play some of the lesser known Spanish courses
such as El Rompido, Isla Canela, Islantilla, Nuevo Portil, Dunas De Donana or
Bellavista. Travelling times to these courses could be as much as two hours form
Tavira.
Above is a description of our holiday venue at the delightful Benamor Golf Club,
near Tavira, which has all of the facilities we look for to make our Golf
Tuition holidays a complete success. Other courses are available, through our
association with Golf Escapes. Contact Stuart for further details
